Background of the Study
Digital storytelling leverages multimedia tools to create engaging narratives, serving as a modern medium for language maintenance among bilingual communities. For Igbo youth, digital storytelling provides a platform to blend traditional narratives with contemporary digital formats, reinforcing bilingual language skills in both Igbo and English. This innovative approach not only enhances language retention but also fosters creativity and cultural pride (Uche, 2023). The interactive nature of digital storytelling encourages active participation, collaboration, and critical thinking, making it an effective tool for maintaining linguistic heritage. Studies indicate that when youth engage with digital media to create and share stories, they experience improved language fluency and cultural connectivity (Ifeoma, 2024). However, challenges such as unequal access to technology and varying digital literacy levels may affect its impact. This study examines how digital storytelling influences bilingual language maintenance among Igbo youth by evaluating its effects on language proficiency, cultural engagement, and intergenerational transmission of heritage narratives (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of digital storytelling to support bilingual language maintenance, many Igbo youth face barriers such as limited access to technology and insufficient digital literacy. These challenges hinder the effective use of digital platforms to reinforce language skills and cultural heritage (Uche, 2023). Additionally, there is a lack of systematic research on how digital storytelling impacts bilingual proficiency and identity among youth, making it difficult to integrate these methods into formal education. This study seeks to address these gaps by investigating the role of digital storytelling in sustaining bilingual language maintenance and proposing strategies to overcome technological and educational limitations (Ifeoma, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of digital storytelling on bilingual language maintenance.

  • To assess its effect on language proficiency and cultural engagement.

  • To recommend strategies for enhancing digital storytelling practices.

Research Questions:

  • How does digital storytelling affect bilingual language proficiency among Igbo youth?

  • What role does it play in maintaining cultural heritage?

  • What measures can improve its implementation in language education?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the innovative use of digital storytelling in supporting bilingual language maintenance among Igbo youth. Its findings will provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers on integrating digital media into language education to promote balanced bilingual proficiency and cultural preservation (Uche, 2023; Eze, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining digital storytelling in formal and informal settings among Igbo youth and does not extend to other digital media forms.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Digital Storytelling: The use of digital tools to create and share narrative content.

  • Bilingual Language Maintenance: Sustaining proficiency in two languages over time.

  • Igbo Youth: Young individuals belonging to the Igbo ethnic group.
